NOSTA Group informs about toll adjustment

Back in June 2023, we reported that the German Cabinet had approved a significant increase in the German truck toll. This amendment to the Federal Highway Toll Act is expected to generate around €7.6 billion in additional revenue, which will be used to strengthen rail as a mode of transport.

Unfortunately, there is still no absolute legal certainty regarding the date of implementation. Currently, December 1, 2023 is planned for the introduction of the new toll structure. Therefore, the adoption of the law by the Bundestag and Bundesrat must be awaited, but this will probably happen by the end of October.

The new law also affects NOSTA Group. Since we provide our transport services in long-distance traffic, we focus in a calculation example (see below) on the vehicle class used there with more than 18 tons total weight and 5 or more axles. But first, we put together the most important facts about the truck toll:

1: Legislator creates new CO² classes

The basis for calculating the German truck toll will be fundamentally changed following approval by the Bundestag and Bundesrat. In addition to the familiar "EURO classes," CO² emission classes are to be introduced for the calculation on December 1, 2023. Therefore, there will be significant increases in the charges per kilometer.

2: Federal government significantly exceeds EU requirements

The new toll law implements an EU requirement for Germany. However, the European side is demanding that it be introduced by March 2024. In addition, the EU is demanding a minimum CO² price per ton of 100 euros. The German government has set a price of 200 euros per ton of CO², thereby significantly exceeding the EU demands.

3: Toll increase of 83 percent

In this way, mileage rates will rise by 83 percent, especially in toll classes with high mileage. This means almost a doubling compared to the previous toll.
